Have you ever run out of gasoline for your car? The engine sputtered and quit. Your travel came to a halt until you could get more gasoline. At one point or another – I believe that most husbands (and wives) find themselves in the same place. Despite the knowledge that we were created in the very image of God, with the ability to tap into the endless power of God, we are left stalled on the side of the road.
Paul’s prayer (Ephesians 3:14-19) to Ephesus was that they would be filled to their measure and be made complete. I believe that Paul prayed this because he knew that it was possible for us to achieve this. I’ve thought about this verse. I think that we have three parts that need our focus:
The point is that we are weak and God is strong, thus being filled to our measure means God does the filling. We are not capable of filling ourselves. The mechanism is through His spirit.
Pray that God would strengthen you that you may be filled to the measure with all the fullness of God.
Our ability to truly love our wives requires us to be rooted and established in love – Christ’s love. I think to understand the depth of Christ’s love we need God’s insight on true love. “God so love the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life”
Pray for insight to grasp what Christ has done for you that you may be filled to the measure with all the fullness of God.
Surpassing knowledge requires that we move beyond our own understanding and logic. We have to allow ourselves to experience God’s love for us. We have to let go of our understanding.
Pray for sight to see the love of Christ in your life which leads to being filled with all the fullness of God.
I suggested praying for three things. All three have one thing in common – God. When you feel like you’ve run out of gas or are sputtering along in your marriage; then answer isn’t more good efforts or beating yourself up. The answer is Christ.
“For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” – Ephesians 3:14-19
